About Hackensack NJ
Hackensack is a city located in Bergen County, New Jersey and serves as its county seat. As of a 2020 census, the city’s population is estimated to be around 44,266 people. The area was officially named “New Barbadoes Township” until 1921 but was unofficially known as “Hackensack” since the 18th century, when the Lenni Lenape Native Americans inhabited it. They lived along a river they called “Achinigeu-hach” or “Ackingsah-sack” which loosely translates to “stony ground” and which today is known as the Hackensack River. The city of Hackensack is named for this river. Hackensack is bordered by the Bergen County municipalities of Bogota, Hasbrouck Heights, Little Ferry, Lodi, Maywood, Paramus, Ridgefield Park, River Edge, South Hackensack, Teaneck and Teterboro.
