About West Milford NJ
West Milford is a township in Passaic County, New Jersey. As of the 2020 census, its population was estimated to be around 24,862 people. West Milford started out as New Milford in western Bergen County in the 18th century. It was settled by disenchanged Dutch settlers from Milford NJ (which was later changed to Newark). This same group of Dutch settlers also established a town in eastern Bergen County called New Milford, so that when they both applied for post offices in 1828 a clerk gave the New Milford in the western part of Bergen County the name West Milford. In 1837 the county of Passaic was created and West Milford was at the western end of the newly formed county. The name actually comes from Milford, Connecticut. West Milford is bordered by the Passaic County municipalities of Bloomingdale and Ringwood.
