5 Tips For Preventing Termites In Your Home

You can use a security alarm to prevent unwanted guests from gaining access to your home, but when it comes to termites, they are harder to lock out.  Termites are quite proficient when it comes to gaining access to your home.  Their number one goal is to find a food source, and there is little that will stop them from attaining that goal.

To prevent termites from invading your space, you have to be proactive, not reactive.  There are several steps you can take to prevent termite infestations.  Here are 5 ideas from our professional home inspectors.

  1. Seal all cracks and holes in the foundation of your home.  Even the smallest openings may provide convenient access for termites.
  2. If you keep firewood outside of your home – keep it away from the house and raised off the ground.  Firewood is a magnet for termites. Also be sure to inspect the wood before bringing it in.
  3. Moisture attracts termites. Fix any leaky pipes that may create moisture within the walls of your home or in the basement.  Also be sure there is no standing water near your home.
  4. Remove dead trees, firewood and any other dead wood near your house that can be feeding sources for termites.
  5. Finally- get a termite inspection annually.  The best way to prevent an infestation is to catch it before it starts.

Top 3 Reasons Home Buyers Need A Home Inspection

Before the sale of a house is made final, homebuyers have a right to ask the seller to disclose and possibly repair any problems with the home.  Many issues like mold and even termites can go undetected and sellers may not even be aware that they exist at the time of a sale.  Having a home inspection is the best way for buyers and sellers to protect themselves.  For buyers, a home inspection will turn up any issues with the home that the seller may be responsible for.  For sellers- if any issue is discovered after the sale of the home, a completed home inspection performed at an earlier date will likely pardon you from responsibly, and likely reveal that the problem occurred AFTER the sale date.

Here are 3 important reasons why buyers need a home inspection:

  1. What you can’t see could really hurt you.  Many common and costly issues with homes are often invisible. Problems with wiring and plumbing may not be visible during a showing.  Get an expert opinion before you fork over that down payment.
  2. Be sure there are no structural problems.  Our licensed home inspectors will examine major structural areas like the roof and foundation to be sure that everything is in satisfactory condition. If serious problems are found, you can negotiate with the seller to either do the required repairs or give you the money to do the repairs yourself.
  3. You’ll end up saving money with a home inspection.  Inspections cost a few hundred dollars, but they could save you from thousands of dollars in repair if problems are uncovered before the sale is final.   An inspection is much cheaper than having to re-wire an entire house.

5 Tips to Prevent Mold After Water Damage

NY and NJ experienced a tremendous amount of rain this past week and it’s important to make sure that any water or flood damage is properly cleaned up. Even if your home did not flood, if you are in an area that saw flooding, your home could still be exposed to excess moisture that may lead to mold. Even just an inch of water in your basement could lead to mold buildup. As we discussed in an earlier blog about the health dangers of mold, mold can lead to health problems for you, your family and even your pets.

Here are 5 tips to prevent mold after water damage. The effectiveness of these tips will be determined, in part, by how long the water was in your home.

  1. This may seem obvious, but it doesn’t always happen. After water damage to your home, you want to immediately disconnect electronics in the affected area and move them to dry ground. Also, any pieces of furniture that can be moved out of the area should be moved immediately to a clean, dry place.
  2. Remove all carpeting including the padding. There is a possibility that your carpet can be saved with a good cleaning and heavy disinfecting, but that is not a definite.
  3. Now that heavy items and carpeting are gone, remove all of the water, down to the last drop.   If you have power, a heavy-duty shop vac is a great way to soak up floodwater. If you don’t have power or are worried about using electrical items, buckets, towels and mops will have to suffice. If the flooding is overwhelming, consider renting a sump pump from a local hardware store.
  4. Dry out the affected area thoroughly. This is so important. You don’t want to leave an ounce of moisture anywhere, if possible. Use fans (commercial fans are great) and a dehumidifier to speed the process.
  5. Disinfect, disinfect, disinfect! After the area has completely dried out (including wood beams, insulation, etc), use a heavy disinfectant in all areas. You also want to disinfect the furniture that was removed.

If you are able to successfully clean up your home after flood damage, you should schedule a mold inspection test within 30 days. Mold can start to grow after just a day or two so it’s important to act as quickly as possible and determine its presence.

His spirit captured the attention of GoPro and Duncan is now the subject of their new mini documentary which reminds us that life is not about what happens to you, it’s about what you make of it.   Everyone from Boxer fans to shelters to news anchors are falling in love with his story- and we think will too.

Duncan burst into the spotlight when a video went viral showing him running freely along a beach in March this year.  GoPro decided to make him the star of a mini 4 minute mini documentary which goes a little deeper into his life.

Buying a Home? Schedule A Home Inspection

Buying a home is stressful. The entire process is full of nail biting moments and one of them is the home inspection. If problems come up during a home inspection (and most homes have at least a few issues), it can create a rift between you and the seller IF you’ve already put an offer on the table.

One way to avoid this is to have an independent home inspection performed before you put an offer on the table. A home inspection will help you make a smarter offer. You will know if there are any issues that need to be addressed, and if your offer should reflect the cost of any problems that may need to be corrected.

On the other hand- if a home inspection report comes up clean and you really want the house- that will give you the confidence you need to make a more aggressive offer.

Whether you ultimately choose to have a home inspection performed before or after you make an offer, the most important thing to remember is to protect yourself and your investment and make sure you receive a home inspection report.

Is It Just Allergies Or Could It Be Mold?

You will never regret having a mold inspection of your NJ home.  Have you been sneezing? Coughing? Suffering from watery eyes? We often chalk this up to allergies, but could it be hidden mold? Mold can lead to serious health problems for children, adults and even pets. Symptoms of mold can include asthma attacks, itchy and watery eyes, coughing, throat irritation and sinus congestion.

If you have experienced these symptoms at home, or at your place of business, call Aurora Home Inspections in NJ for a thorough mold inspection.

When it comes to the dangers of mold- pets are just as at risk as humans. Pets can also suffer health consequences as a result of mold and may have an increase in scratching, licking, rubbing or chewing of their skin.

Many people don’t know whether or not mold is growing in their home or place of business. Because mold likes dark, damp environments, it’s often out of sight.

And what many people do not know is that mold could be growing in their homes right now.

While it is true that buildings and homes along the shoreline are more susceptible to mold because of increased moisture, any building or home, regardless of location, can be a source of mold.

Aurora Home Inspections can perform a thorough mold inspection for you or business. Mold investigation may include indoor air sampling for mold spores, as well as surface, bulk, and swab sampling. We will also measure the temperature and relative humidity of the indoor air, as well as determine the moisture levels present in wood, drywall, and concrete.

Aurora Home Inspections – Radon

Radon testing is an important part of a NY or NJ home inspection.  Have you had your home tested for radon gas?  It is the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, according to EPA estimates.  Aurora Home Inspections serving NJ, NY and CT advises all homeowners to have a radon home inspection performed. Our licensed home inspectors are experienced and knowledgeable in radon testing and can perform a simple test to detect if your home has elevated levels of radon.

Radon testing has become such an  important issue that ‘Radon Action Week’ has been formed during the month of October to help home owners become more aware of the dangers of radon gas.  Because it comes from the ground, it is very easy for Radon to seep into your home undetected.  It may not only infiltrate the air in your home but it can affect your water as well.   Additionally, radon is odorless, tasteless and invisible, which means you could have elevated levels of radon in your home without even realizing it.

Radon gas is estimated to affect one in fifteen homes in the US.  Your home could be one of them.   If you’ve noticed that you or someone in your family is getting sick more often, that could be a sign of elevated levels of radon in your home.

What If Your Home Inspection Turns Up Radon Gas?

The EPA has what it considers ‘acceptable’ levels of radon gas in a home.  If your home is above those levels, remediation may be required.  This could be as simple as adding additional venting equipment.

For more information about radon testing in NJ and NY, watch our YouTube video below and give us a call at 201-476-9200.  You may also fill out the ‘contact us’ form on our website and we will get right back to you.
